Deck Builders: How to Find the Right Team for Your Project

Choosing between deck builders can feel like a gamble. Everyone has a portfolio, everyone promises quality, and quotes can vary wildly for what looks like the same job. Yet the team you pick will shape how your deck looks, how safe it feels and how long it lasts.

This guide covers what to look for, which questions to ask and the warning signs that should send you elsewhere. We'll also explain why the material you choose matters just as much as who installs it.

Get clear on your deck before you call anyone

Good deck builders will ask a lot of questions, so it helps to have answers ready. Think about size, shape and height first. Then consider how you'll use the space, whether that's a quiet reading corner, an entertainment area or a walkway around a pool.

It also pays to decide on materials early. Timber and composite need different sub-frames, fixings and finishing, so your choice affects the quote. If you're unsure, our decking estimator gives you a rough board and clip count from your dimensions before you speak to anyone.

Questions to ask deck builders before you sign

Once you have a shortlist, a proper conversation will tell you far more than a glossy website. Ask every team the same questions so you can compare like with like. In addition, get the answers in writing, since that protects both you and the builder if anything changes later on.

  1. Can I see decks you've built, ideally a few that are several years old?

  2. Will you give me a written quote that itemises materials, labour and extras?

  3. What sub-frame will you use, and how far apart will the joists sit?

  4. Who handles any council approval my project needs?

  5. What guarantee do you offer on workmanship, and what does the material warranty cover?

  6. What does the payment schedule look like?

Red flags worth walking away from

Most deck builders are honest professionals. Even so, a few warning signs come up again and again in renovation horror stories. If you spot any of these, slow down and get another quote before you commit to anything, however good the sales pitch sounds.

  • A large upfront deposit before any work starts or materials arrive.

  • A verbal agreement with no written scope or contract.

  • Vague answers about the sub-frame, fixings or joist spacing.

  • No references, or only photos of brand-new work.

  • A price that's dramatically lower than every other quote.

Will your deck need council approval?

This one catches people out. Building rules differ by municipality, and some structures need plans while others don't. For example, the City of Cape Town's guide to minor works lists carports, pools and larger sheds as needing approval. If your project isn't on that list, the City suggests checking with your district planning office.

Raised decks, decks attached to the house and anything with a roof are worth checking carefully. A good installer knows the local rules and flags this early. If they brush it off, that's another red flag.

Why the material matters as much as the builder

Even the best workmanship can't make a material outperform itself. Timber decks need regular sealing to hold up against sun and rain. By contrast, composite boards skip that cycle, which means fewer call-outs and far less upkeep once the job is done.

Our composite decking boards are made in Namibia from about 70% wood fibre with a protective outer shell. They resist fading, staining, scratching and mould, and they clean up with soap and water. Because the system uses 350 mm joist spacing and clip fixings, installation stays neat and consistent.

Also ask any builder about the warranty on the boards themselves, not just their workmanship. We publish our product warranties and a maintenance and care guide on our product documentation page, so you can read the terms before you commit.

Supply and installation from one team

Finding the right deck builders comes down to clear communication, honest pricing and a material you can trust. When the people who make the boards also install them, you cut out a lot of guesswork, because there's no finger-pointing between supplier and builder.

At Acacia, we don't only manufacture composite decking. Our team can install it too, so you get one point of contact from quote to handover. Contact us with your measurements and ideas, and we'll put together a quote for supply and installation.
